Roger Ballen is an award-winning photographer. Ballen has lived and worked in Johannesburg, South Africa since 1970. Ballen’s photography career spans over half a century. During this time he has focused exclusively on black and white film. Ballen’s photographs have been showcased globally at some of the world’s most prestigious galleries including the Victoria and Albert Museum (London), Museum of Modern Art (New York) and the Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris) and the Smithsonian Institute’s Museum of African Art (Washington, USA).
What drives you? | I am driven by my existential needs to define my life experience through photography.

Crucial Review | It is crucial to be your own best critic. Only through continued self-criticism does one improve.
How I Use My Mind I believe one’s mind should be focused and not be distracted by minor events whether they be positive or negative. In other words one has to be able to differentiate between long-term goals and short-term aberrations.
Lessons I Have Learnt | As I age and look back on my career; I feel it is important to find the ‘right’ balances in life.
Performing At My Peak | It is important to keep practicing one’s occupation, to live with it for 24 hours a day, and to find challenges in what one is engaged in.
Inspiration vs Passion | I think it is crucial that one does not depend on inspiration rather be passionate and committed. One should try to be inspired by what one has accomplished rather than depend on finding outside inspirations.
The Meaning Of Life? | One creates meaning for oneself; ultimately one must contend with the word ‘nothing,’
Advice | Find a career that you have passion for. If you love what you are engaged in you are likely to excel.
