Mahatma Gandhi | Leader of Indian Independence Movement

Mahatma Gandhi

Mohandas Gandhi is considered the father of the Indian independence movement. Gandhi spent 20 years in South Africa working to fight discrimination. It was there that he created his concept of satyagraha, a non-violent way of protesting against injustices. While in India, Gandhi’s obvious virtue, simplistic lifestyle, and minimal dress endeared him to the people. He spent his remaining years working diligently to both remove British rule from India as well as to better the lives of India’s poorest classes. Many civil rights leaders, including Martin Luther King Jr., used Gandhi’s concept of non-violent protest as a model for their own struggles.

Gandhi 4
On Building Wealth | Seek not greater wealth, but simpler pleasure; not higher fortune, but deeper felicity.

On Forgiveness | The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is an attribute of the strong.
An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.

On Happiness | A thousand candles can be lighted from the flame of one candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness can be spread without diminishing that of yourself.
Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.

On Time Management | “The trouble is, you think you have time.”

On Lifelong Learning | Continue to grow and evolve. Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.

Gandhi 6
On Inner Strength | Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will.
Change yourself – you are in control.

On Potential | A man is but a product of his thoughts. What he thinks he becomes.
Be the change you want to see in this world.
The difference between what we do and what we are capable of doing would suffice to solve most of the world’s problem.

On Humankind | You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty.
As human beings, our greatness lies not so much in being able to remake the world – that is the myth of the atomic age – as in being able to remake ourselves.
The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated. I hold that the more helpless a creature the more entitled it is to protection by man from the cruelty of humankind.

The Legacy He Left | My life is my message.

On Serving Others | The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.
Consciously or unconsciously, every one of us does render some service or other. If we cultivate the habit of doing this service deliberately, our desire for service will steadily grow stronger, and will make, not only our own happiness, but that of the world at large.
