Chris Burkard is a self-taught photographer and artist, based in Central Coast California, whose work is layered by surf, outdoor, lifestyle and travel subjects. Burkard’s images are punctuated by energized landscapes and moments of bliss, by adventure seeking and the lifestyle that ensues, by movement and intuitive light-working capabilities. With the ocean as his main muse, Burkard has consistently captured this subject in timeless and expansive photographic impressions, utilizing the tool of surfing to approach the ocean’s intricate personality and then extending out to include the human personalities that draw meaning from this same source.
My Definition Of Success | To me, I’m successful if I’m inspiring others. If I’m not sharing my work with the world and actually making a difference, what’s the point?
The Difference Between Good And Great | I think the difference is often something as simple as determination and the amount of time spent in that particular skill or craft. Musicians are musicians because they work hard at what they’re passionate about, even when it’s not always fun. Those who become excellent in their craft are the ones who dedicate themselves to it.
A Key Talent | I’m a self-taught photographer, and I Learned almost entirely through trial and error. A lot of practice and working at what I loved to shoot was a big part of it. I did a few internships that definitely furthered my career and taught me a lot about the business side of things. But essentially, some of the best advice I can give is that personal work ethic and determination can often take you further than a college decree will! There isn’t a formula to success, but there are principals that can be used that will often lead to a successful career!
The Characteristics Of Success | One of the things I’ve learned is that the best thing that you can do as an inspiring photographer is to identify a style that represents you well, develop within that style, and keep shooting to perfect it. It’s super important to have your images be recognizable by editors and others who are looking at your work. With the large number of photographers that are out there now you must find ways to stand out. The best compliment I can ever receive is when people know my photography work instantly when they see it.
Lessons I Have Learnt | I’ve learned that the most important things in my life are the people I love. I wouldn’t be where I am if it weren’t for my wife and family, and the friendships and relationships I have.
Performing At My Peak | I believe it’s important to surround myself with creative and like-minded people. It helps keep me stay inspired and not get into a “rut” or creative slump.
Resources I Use To Stay Inspired | I read a lot, and love auto biographies and history books. I am also fairly active on social media such as Instagram, Facebook, etc. as that is one of the ways I am often inspired.
Advice On Building Wealth | Money can’t buy happiness. Make sure that in your pursuit of “success”, you aren’t just pursuing money or finances, but the things that are truly valuable.
On Inspiring Others | I strive to collaborate and work with other photographers and creatives, as well as seek out employees and interns that are like minded and on the same page. It’s definitely something that I strive to do and grow in.
I Am Inspired By | A few of my inspirations are photographers like Ansel Adams, Jimmy Chin, and Forest Woodward. I’m always inspired by what they’re shooting and the things they’re accomplishing.
